Data requests

USI data can be permitted for use in education or training research.

We are able to provide data on USI or personal information for education or training research. The Student Identifiers Act (the Act) provides that the Registrar may disclose this information if 2 conditions are met:

  1. The research relates to education or training.
  2. The request meets the requirements specified by the Ministerial Council.

Once we receive a request

Prior to granting a request, we will seek from the Ministerial Council to ensure the request meets the requirements.

The Registrar will make their decision within 30 days and advise the applicant in writing.

Obligations of recipients

If you are granted access to USIs or USIs with personal information you must comply with the following sections of the Act:

  • Section 16 protects individuals from misuse and unauthorised access
  • Section 17 covers unauthorised collection, use or disclosure
  • Section 23 provides that breaches of section 11, 16 and 17 of the Act are taken to be interferences with the privacy of an individual for the purposes of the Privacy Act and can be investigated by the Information Commissioner.

  • contact details and information about you and/or your organisation
  • the reason you are requesting information, including intended uses, any derived benefits, and why it is impracticable to seek consent from the individuals
  • whether you are seeking identified information under s18, unidentified information under s25, or information under both ss 18 and 25 of the Student Identifiers Act (Cth) 2014
  • the format you are seeking this information in
  • any identified public interest in this request
  • if you have the approval of an Ethics Committee within your organisation
  • how the information will be used
  • if you will engage in data matching activities, including details
  • if the data will be disclosed to any third parties, including how the data will be disclosed and who will have access to the data
  • if the data be published, including details of how the data will be published
  • if you have requested this data before, including details of your previous data request(s)
  • how and when the data will be destroyed at the conclusion of use.
